According to foreign news on November 1, Japan’s crude oil imports from Saudi Arabia increased slightly in September, totaling approximately 29 million barrels, accounting for 37.1% of total oil imports.
According to data released by the Natural Resources and Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, Japan imported 27.93 million barrels of crude oil from Saudi Arabia in August 2023, accounting for 36% of total imports.
In September, Japan’s crude oil imports totaled 78.34 million barrels, the majority (96%) of which came from Arab countries. Specifically, 75.24 million barrels were supplied by five countries: the United Arab Emirates (30.51 million barrels, 38.9%), Kuwait (8.51 million barrels, 10.9%), Qatar (5.17 million barrels, 6.6%) and Oman (2.1 million barrels, 2.6%).
It is worth noting that Japan continued to maintain its ban on oil imports from Iran and Russia in September. To meet its oil needs, Japan obtains some supplies from Central and South America (1.8%), Oceania (0.9%), Southeast Asia (0.7%), the United States (0.5%) and Indonesia (0.2%).
These statistics reflect the amount of oil arriving at Japanese port refineries, storage tanks and warehouses in September. Japan relies on crude oil for about a third of its energy needs.
