Global Polyurethane Network, March 4th: Specialty chemical giant Lanxess subsidiary of Germany - Germany Bond-Laminates GmbH recently launched a new Tepex brand continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic high-performance composite materials, including halogen-free flame-retardant polymer Carbonate composite.
Jochen Bauder, general manager of Bond-Laminates, stated: "Our new Tepex FR products have passed the UL 94 fire safety standard of the Underwriters Laboratories, and they have reached the highest UL standard V0 within a sample thickness of 0.4 to 2 mm."
The thickness of Tepex FR is mainly in the range of 0.5 to 1.2 mm. The fiber volume content is 45%-55%. The composite material exhibits excellent mechanical properties, for example, the flexural modulus of carbon-reinforced grades is 40-54 GPa depending on the fiber content, while the glass fiber-reinforced material has a modulus between 20 and 24 GPa.
Their mechanical properties, light weight and ease of handling make these new composite materials particularly suitable for the production of large, thin-walled and rigid housings such as laptops, tablets and televisions. Bauder said: "They can replace aluminum and magnesium and are easier to produce and handle. Compared with injection molded parts, Tepex can be used to make thinner shells to reduce installation space."
